The Year of the Dragon

Gung Hay Fat Choy!  Or in other words…Happy Chinese New Year!

The Year of the Dragon was celebrated at MPL Children’s Room with a nine foot hanging dragon along with a program filled with stories and a dragon craft.  Stories for the Chinese New Year program were varied.

“The Next New Year”, by Janet S Wong, tells the story of a young boy’s veiw of the approaching Chinese New Year. The boy talks about how his different friends celebrate the holiday, and all the special preparations that he does to get ready for the  holiday.  A great book for introducing readers to the Chinese New Year.

“The Gift” by Yong Chen  The story tells of a special stone that is found by Amy’s Uncle in China and how it is made into a dragon to be given as a gift to Amy in clebration of the Chinese New Year.

“Fortune Cookies” by Albert Bitterman is a sweet story about a young girl who checks her daily fortune with fortune cookies…and cats!   Each day she learns  a lesson with each cookie she cracks open.  At the end of the week, she has just has many cats as she does fortune coookies!

Hot Cocoa and Gingerbread Storytime

Ahhh.  Tis the season for hot (in this case, warm) cocoa, gingerbread, and stories.   This past week, we started the weekend on the right foot with great seasonal stories followed by a “gingerbread” craft where the kids decorated their own gingerbread boy or girl foam ornament to take home.

Here’s the rundown on the stories we used:

Llama Llama Holiday Drama by Anna Dewdney.  I just love all the Llama Llama books, and kids do too because they can definitely empathize with Llama.  In this book Llama Llama has a very long time to wait, and wait, and wait some more for it to be Christmas.  And there’s so much to do before the big day!  Mama Llama, as usual, is sure to remind Llama Llama what the season (and Mama Llama love) is all about.

Gingerbread Mouse by Katy Bratum.   When Mouse loses her home, she has to find a new one, and fast!  She finds a temporary home in a Gingerbread House, but will it last beyond the holidays?  Maybe a certain jolly stranger will save the day for Mouse.

Merry Christmas, Big Hungry Bear!  By Don and Audrey Wood.  Little Mouse is all set for Christmas, complete with a Christmas tree bursting with presents.  But there’s only one problem….BIG HUNGRY BEAR!  Will Mouse save all the presents for himself or will he be brave enough to face the big hungry bear’s cave?  With a surprise ending, this book is a heart warmer.

Owl Storytime

Owls are some of the most fascinating birds to watch, one only has to watch this enchanting owl video to see why so many people love them:

One of our past Playful Preschoolers storytime themes was about owls, and there are some great storytime books out there if you’d like to check them out for your own kids.

The books we used were:

We also used our 5 Little Owls flannel board (love their eyes).

For our craft, we each made our own owl with moveable wings and decorated it with feathers, markers, and big owly googly eyes.  Another successful storytime!
